Berryz工房/Berryz Koubou/Berryz Kobo is a 7 member all-girl J-pop group, formed in 2004 from the Hello! Project Kids. The name of the group means Berryz Workshop; the initial concept behind the group was that the other members would be rotational, with some of the first line-up leaving to make way for the other Hello! Kids who weren't initially chosen. (This idea was eventually dropped, probably cause Berryz's sales sucked so hardcore initially and/or Tsunku decided he didn't want to go to the hassle of changing members: the other H!P Kids plus an Egg ended up debuting as C-ute in 2005.)
Some early pimping for the group happened in the form of the temporary groups Aa! (Miyabi), ZYX (Momoko, Saki) and 4Kids (Risako, Maasa) but this was the first time that a unit entirely comprised of the Kids would release a CD and have to stand on their own feet. Their first work as a unit was as back-up dancers to their senpai W
, which is kind of lulzy considering they could barely dance in sync at this stage, and they made their CD debut on the 3rd of March, 2004.
The group was not at first well received, especially in the international fandom, where they were regarded as the little jailbait that couldn't and shouldn't (and besides, if you really wanted to go paedo, avex debuted the legendary Sweets the year before, who had songs about lolitas and blowjobs.
Don't get me wrong, I love Love like candyfloss, but I'm convinced that's what the song is about, but that's neither here nor there.
). Their second single
went on to become their lowest selling.
And their third was basically just a rehash of some old Morning Musume album song
. Okay, so apparently not a rehash, but rather Tsunku was so unhappy with how it turned out that he rehashed it into a superior version for MM. u_u
However, over the course of the years, as a result of the decline of the elders or a rise in the quality of Berryz singles or more of the girls becoming legal (depending on who you listen to) they quickly rose up the ranks of H!P acts and are now sucessfully nipping at the heels of the flagship, Morning Musume. In 2007, they became the group with the youngest average age to ever perform a concert at Saitama Super Arena, surpassing morning Musume's record. In 2008, they even won the Asia Newcomer Award (yes, 4 years after their debut, who cares, it's still an acknowledgement of greatness) in Seoul, along with K-Poppers SHINee (Onew was totally making eyes at Chinami, btw) and now in 2010, they're holding a concert of their very own in Thailand of all places.
They are amazing and you should love them. ( This is why.Collapse )
